Yoga on prescription
Paul Fox and Heather Mason, both longstanding friends of the LYT Centre, have written the definitive guide to yoga as social prescription, Yoga on Prescription: The Yoga4Health Social Prescribing Protocol (Singing Dragon, 2022).
The book sets out the ten-week Yoga4Health programme developed by the Yoga in Healthcare Alliance: an evidence-based course designed for NHS patients referred by their GP or social prescriber. It is aimed at people who are socially isolated, at risk of cardiovascular disease or Type 2 diabetes, or living with stress and mild to moderate anxiety or low mood – the point being prevention, catching people before ill health becomes chronic and giving them a daily practice they can genuinely sustain.
For teachers, the value is in the detail. Paul and Heather explain the thinking behind the protocol and then walk through it posture by posture, with clear guidance for teaching on the mat, on the floor and in a chair, so the practice can meet a class wherever its members happen to be.
If you teach yoga for health and wellbeing, or you're curious about how yoga is finding its place within the NHS, it's a book worth having on the shelf.
